Record Store Day Black Friday will take place on November 27, and the new UK and Ireland list gives collectors a first look at what will be waiting in shops. Announced on October 6, the selection includes Florence + The Machine, Sombr and Bruce Springsteen. Releases will be offered by participating independent stores from 8 a.m.
Florence + The Machine have four chamber versions of songs from Everybody Scream on the list. That's the sort of release that makes a return to a familiar album appealing. The songs are already there; the interest is in hearing them arranged another way. It doesn't require treating the new version as better than the original, either. There can be room for both.

For Sombr, the attraction is a first vinyl edition of In Another Life, pressed on silver vinyl. Shawn Mendes' MTV Unplugged gets its first retail release, while Springsteen & The E Street Band are represented by Live at Tower Theatre Philly 1975. Holly Humberstone's Live from Cruel World adds another performance recording to the choices.
Also announced are a 20th-anniversary edition of 2Pac's Pac's Life and the first vinyl release of Playboi Carti's MUSIC – SORRY 4 DA WAIT. There are special releases from Noah Kahan, Jessie Ware, KATSEYE and Carly Rae Jepsen as well. It's quite a spread of artists, which is good news for anyone whose record collection refuses to stay in one genre.
The sheer number of choices can make a list like this harder to use than it first appears. Start with the artists you care about, then look at what is actually on the record. A live album, an alternate arrangement and a new pressing of an EP aren't interchangeable things. One might give you music you don't have; another might be a format you've been waiting for. The sleeve and the vinyl colour can come after that.
There is a connection to our look at the trade in unreleased music, although these are official editions. Both involve the desire to find something beyond the familiar catalogue. With an announced release, there is a title and an edition to check. You can decide whether the contents interest you without having to work out where an anonymous file came from.
Before November arrives, it would be sensible to ask a local shop about its plans. A release appearing on a list doesn't mean every store will have copies, and availability can differ between countries. Keep that in mind if you are browsing announcements from abroad. For the UK and Ireland, November 27 is the date. There's time to narrow down the wish list, listen to some music and avoid buying something simply because it might be scarce.
