I never took into account

if the phone has stopped
and if the repetition is

And now as I drift lightly
Off to sleep
My mind gets to thinking
What could now never be
I answered the phone, heard a sigh on the line
She said she was sure I wouldn’t pick up this time
She begged me not to interrupt, she had thought of this all day
She said the start was the mistake, said we should try another way
We’ll try another way
