We drove all night and half the next day
Up through the mountains to the open space
Got through registration and searched for my dorm
I was so thankful he'd been there before
He carried my boxes and helped me unpack
Told old college stories until I laughed
But the tears started falling as we ran out of time
And I did all I could to avoid his goodbye
He said, "I wish I could stay here
It's hard on me too
But I know that there's so much
That you've got to do"

I made it through school and made some big plans
Yeah, I chased my dreams in some far away land
But everything changed when I got the call
And chasing those dreams meant nothing at all

He said, "That's the last thing
That I'd let you do"

With the wings that he gave me I learned how to fly
One day they brought me back to be by his side
