A family of four sits down at the table next to me

Familiar conversation

The younger girl says
While her father looks around with more than a touch of
impatience

The woman's talking too fast
Deep lines are etched around her mouth
He seems to be listening
But keeps glancing at his watch
I used to be like that I think
Always so pressed for time
Handing out my company, like some precious gift
To another family, in another lifetime
Another family... Used to be mine
Had a family of my own, but now I'm quite alone
We've grown so far apart
May as well be living in different countries
