I know that we believe we're masters of our destiny
But when I see so many die, you know it doesn't seem that way to me
I see people fighting here and there, The dogs of war they're everywhere
Now violence walks the streets at night, right is wrong, and wrong is right
And when you hear those tiny children who spit and snarl and curse
Then don't you think that it's a sign Civilization's in reverse?
Civilization is in reverse. Ah way.
I know we're supposed to have left the dark ages far behind
But look around us and you'll see, we've done nothing of the kind
Life's no more precious than before, death just got easier to ignore
And you can't listen to the news without somebody's been abused
Like some old lady who's been battered for the contents of her purse
Then don't you think there's no doubt, that Civilization is in reverse?
Civilization's in reverse. Oh yeah.
We're going backwards, it's getting worse,
Into the future, with civilization in reverse. Civilization's in reverse.
And I knew a man who said 'love is all you need, I believe'
He said 'Imagine a brotherhood of man, imagine what it could achieve',
But then he was just a youth wrapped up in innocence and truth,
Original sin could never be, at least in his homespun philosophy,
But when a young child is abducted and the parents left to fear the worst
Then don't you think that there's no doubt, Civilization is in reverse?

And anarchy, well it starts in school, not the exception, it's now the rule,
And all these children, these innocents who spit and snarl and curse
Let's just confess, we've made this mess, now Civilization is in reverse?
