As I started down the street one day A man came up to me, and he did say: "You can't spend your time all alone" I said: "what do you think you know" In the winter of my discontent Solace came and solace quickly went So I tried to settle down In some long forgotten town But I just could not escape myself I probably could have used a little help But as usual I refused 'Cause help to me always just It felt like abuse (*2) So I put myself up on a cross I made some noise but could not get across No one could hear all my cries So I cut the rope and apologized For all the damage I had done 'Cause I was just a friend to everyone Who just did not know right from wrong Which makes it easier to get along When you're feeling real low down And kinda tired of just hangin' around In the town of Caroline I walked up and down those Those powerlines (*2) Someone is hiding underneath the stairs I try to tell myself that no one is there But in the real country dark Someone is dying underneath the stars So I could just say fair thee well my friend But just in case we never meet again I'm hiding something in the ground And only you know where it It can be found
