Mapmaker Landmarks For Locals
It's a night light in my hallway
as ancient as the swing
drifting gently in my own backyard
it's a crypt behind the highway
a landmark for the locals
that make love behind the parking lot
it's a corner of my being
a mirror to myself
that explains the reasons i can't think
it's a fountain of excitement
a river of suspense
monumental springs that i can dream
we are not lost
we are not following trails

if we stopped ourselves then we would fail

it's a window in your basement
that shows the time of day
when your watch is in the factory
it's a lonely dirty alley
suburban effigy
used by neither criminals nor thieves
climb across your boundaries
let yourself be taken away
to the invisible points on the map
all the famous attractions
before they fall and wither away
they all go home
and we stay out to play
it's the colors put together
of fall and itchy sweaters
burning pumpkin spice that makes smile
it's a walk along the grasses
away from all the masses
that gives us a chance to think a while
we are not lost
