Lavinia Valeriana On A Periled Psyche
Day-by-day it does come
as a chancer sounding the death knell;
the spectre carrying another insomnia spell
sowing scorn on all that has amassed,
but a steadfast heart can last the cycle.
This hell-born serpent and phantom unjust
will over-and-over kiss the sole of Michael.
To the shadows it is sent and
cast out, from a soul I will not have lent
to temptation and is told never to return,
until the mind takes another unsound turn.
I weep as I must:
Cer o 'ma! Cer o 'ma!
Ashes-to-ashes, dust-to-dust!
So, night-by-night, it tries,
intruding on my cries,
the ghost of a darkly past,
sowing scorn on all that has amassed
and always, imperilling the psyche
to a dead-end, but a steadfast heart
will never break nor bend, but strike!
Again, to the shadows, I send and
cast it out and tell it never to return,
until the mind takes another unsound turn.
