Pennsylvania sunrise...ten degrees at best
Peerin' from the window of a club car heading west
After mornin' glory...money for the miles
Someone said I'll do this for a while
Across a waking countryside...two days with no sleep
Bridges, towns and tunnels crossing rivers wide and deep
Workers risin', big bird flyin', children off to school
Pickup trucks and geniuses and fools
Brakemen at the depot...bundled to the cold
Monday morning paper and the sky is burnin' gold
Goodbye kisses painted miss is curled up in the back
Runnin' from a memory on a thousand miles of track
The folks in old Virginia, they took me to their hearts
And it's a ways to where I'm going, but it's a long time from the start
And this train it's a gentle giant with an engine and an eye
And I'm a wounded bird returning to the sky
